A total of 128 journalists were killed globally in 2025, more than half in the Middle East, according to the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ). The organisation said 56 media professionals were killed in the Palestinian territories amid Israel’s war with Hamas in Gaza.

Deaths were also recorded in Yemen, Ukraine, Sudan, Peru, India and other countries. IFJ General Secretary Anthony Bellanger described the toll as a “global red alert” and criticised the impunity of perpetrators behind the attacks.

The IFJ also reported that 533 journalists are currently in prison worldwide, a figure that has more than doubled over the past five years. China topped the list, holding 143 journalists behind bars, including in Hong Kong under national security laws.

The IFJ count for journalists killed is higher than figures from Reporters Without Borders and UNESCO due to differing methodologies. This year’s IFJ tally also included nine accidental deaths, highlighting the ongoing risks faced by media workers worldwide.
