18 People Arrested, 149 Referees Suspended as Turkey Investigates Football Betting Breach

Eighteen people have been arrested in Turkey as part of an investigation into referees suspected of betting on football matches. The Istanbul prosecutor’s office said warrants were issued for 21 individuals, including 17 referees and the president of a first-division club.

Officials say the probe focuses on allegations of match-fixing and abuse of power, though details on how many referees are among those detained have not been released. The case has sparked concern over integrity in Turkish football.

The Turkish Football Federation’s Disciplinary Council had earlier suspended 149 referees accused of breaching betting regulations. The suspensions range between eight and twelve months.

Authorities have not confirmed whether any of those suspended are suspected of placing bets on matches they officiated, as investigations into the scandal continue.
