The $2.8 billion Ajaokuta–Kaduna–Kano (AKK) Gas Pipeline is scheduled for activation early next year, the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd, Bashir Ojulari, has announced. The update followed a project tour by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, alongside Ojulari and NNPC’s Executive Vice President (Gas, Power, and New Energy), Olalekan Ogunleye.
Ojulari said the company has completed welding the main pipeline, including the critical River Niger crossing, a milestone that had delayed progress for years. The completion clears the way for connecting the pipeline in early 2026, enabling full gas supply to the northern region.
The AKK pipeline is expected to stimulate industrialisation across Kaduna, Kano, Abuja, and Ajaokuta, supporting fertiliser plants, power generation, and other gas-based industries. Ojulari said the project would also create opportunities for industrial parks and economic development in the region.

NNPC projects oil output to rise to 1.8 million barrels per day in 2026, with gas production continuing to increase. Ojulari credited structural reforms under the Petroleum Industry Act for enabling the company to operate profitably and noted that President Bola Tinubu has set a target of $30 billion in new investments by 2030 and oil output of 2 million barrels per day by 2027.
