At least 20 women and young girls have been abducted by bandits in Moriki town, located in Zurmi Local Government Area of Zamfara State. A resident, Sufyanu Moriki, said the victims were kidnapped on Saturday while collecting firewood on the outskirts of the town.
Police in Zamfara are yet to confirm the incident. The latest abduction is part of a broader wave of violence across the northwest, where criminal gangs have taken advantage of minimal government presence to carry out raids. Attacks have displaced thousands of farmers, worsening food insecurity and malnutrition in the region.

The violence, initially sparked by clashes between herders and farmers, has evolved into organised crime. Armed groups now impose levies on communities and have expanded their operations through alliances with jihadist groups, further destabilising rural areas in northern Nigeria.
