44 Federal Lawmakers urge President Tinubu to release Nnamdi Kanu

Forty four serving federal lawmakers have written to President Bola Tinubu requesting the release of the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu. The legislators, drawn from both northern and southern parts of the country, submitted a two page letter urging the President to invoke his constitutional powers to secure Kanu’s freedom.

In the letter, the group known as Concerned Federal Lawmakers also asked President Tinubu to convene an all inclusive political roundtable involving key stakeholders. They said such a process would help address national challenges and open a pathway to resolving the matter through dialogue.

The lawmakers appealed to the President to instruct the Attorney General of the Federation to discontinue Kanu’s prosecution. They argued that several domestic and international pronouncements in Kanu’s favour, as well as rising public calls for his release, made a political approach necessary.

The letter was signed by Hon Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, Hon Obi Aguocha and 42 other lawmakers. They said discussions were held across party lines and ethnic groups before reaching the resolution, adding that a political solution would support national reconciliation and stability.
