‘64.5million Persons Need Assistance, Protection In West Africa’

An estimated 64.5 million people require assistance and protection in the West African region.

This is according to the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Mr. Abel Enitan.

Speaking at an Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) regional workshop on the validation of baseline data on the humanitarian needs assessment of Persons of Concern, notably; IDPS, refugees, returnees, stateless persons, asylum seekers and communities, the permanent secretary, who was represented by the Ministry’s Director of Humanitarian Affairs, Mr Valentine Ezulu, said In light of the prevailing challenges, characterised by violence, insecurity, armed conflicts, natural disasters and governance issues, the region faces deepening humanitarian crises.

Meanwhile, ECOWAS is planning to develop a humanitarian needs assessment for the assistance of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), refugees, and asylum seekers within the region.
