800 Former Boko Haram Fighters Undergoing Deradicalisation says Defence HQ

The Defence Headquarters says 800 former Boko Haram fighters who surrendered to the military are currently undergoing deradicalisation under Operation Safe Corridor for eventual reintegration into society.

Speaking on a TV interview monitored by Radio Now’s Newsdesk, the Chief of Defence Operations, Maj.-Gen. Emeka Onumajuru, disclosed that while 129,000 insurgents and their families have surrendered, only a carefully selected group is part of the rehabilitation programme. He assured that the one-year process, handled by professionals, is sufficient for re-orientation.

The military, he explained, is adopting both kinetic and non-kinetic strategies to combat insurgency, emphasizing that force alone cannot win the war against terrorism. He averred that some surrendered fighters remain in detention and face legal scrutiny before being considered for rehabilitation.
