10th NASS: Senators-Elect, Reps Insist On Open Contest, Push For Kalu, Yari Ticket

Some members-elect of the incoming 10th National Assembly say they will independently choose their leaders at the inauguration of the parliament. Their position comes after the announcement by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday that Senator Akpabio is the party’s preferred candidate for the Senate Presidency, and Hon. Tajudeen Abbas for the speakership of the House.

The zoning formula was reported to have provoked the senators-elect to reinvigorate their earlier quest to vote for their choice in the duo of Abdulaziz Yari and current Chief Whip of the Senate,  Senator Orji Uzor Kalu for the top two leadership positions in the Red Chambers.

Some members of the House of Representatives  also say the party’s choices are contrary to the open contest practice which the President-elect benefitted from during the APC presidential primaries.
