Fuel Subsidy Removal – Labour Unions React

Some labour leaders in the country are calling on all stakeholders, including the government, to revisit the position of President Bola Tinubu on fuel subsidy removal.

President Tinubu had affirmed the removal of fuel subsidy during his inaugural address, noting that there is no provision for it in the budget in place upon his assumption of office.

Labour leaders told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Lagos that the issue needs a holistic approach.

The National Deputy President, Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), Mr Tommy Okon, and the Secretary-General, Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, Mr. Lumumba Okugbawa, both say there needs to be stakeholder engagements including with organised labour.

While responding to the matter, the TUC Secretary-General, Mr Nuhu Toho, said the union will issue a statement in reaction to some of the issues raised in the president’s speech.
