Civil Society Situation Room Demands Apology From INEC Chairman Over 2023 Polls

The Nigerian Civil Society Situation Room, a coalition of 70 organisations, is demanding an apology from Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

The group says the Chairman should apologise to Nigerians for what they describe as his failure and the poor conduct of the 2023 general elections.

In its final statement on the elections, the coalition says contrary to expectations, the 2023 general election was marred by very poor organisation, severe logistical and operational failure, lack of essential electoral transparency, substantial disruption of voting, and several incidents of violence.

The CSOs called for an amendment of the Constitution to remove the position of Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) under the control and direction of the Commission, replacing them with State Directors of Elections.

The coalition is also calling for INEC to be unbundled as suggested by the Justice Uwais Committee on electoral reform.

The organisation also says an effective legal framework be formulated for the establishment of an Electoral Offences Commission and Tribunal, a Political Parties Registration and Regulation Commission, and an agency to handle constituency delimitation.
