Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, says the Department of State Services should transfer Mr. Godwin Emefiele to the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for further investigation, as the DSS, he says, lacks the power to investigate and prosecute Mr. Emefiele in respect of allegations of money laundering and other economic crimes.
Last Friday, Mr. Emefiele was suspended by President Bola Tinubu who instructed him to transfer all responsibilities to Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi, deputy governor, operations directorate.

A day after that, the DSS announced that Mr. Emefiele was in its custody for what it calls “some investigative reasons”.
The suspended CBN Governor has been a person of interest of the DSS since 2022 over allegations of terrorism financing. The agency had sought an arrest warrant from a Federal High Court — but the application was declined on the grounds that there was no evidence to back the claim. A Federal Capital Territory High Court later issued an order restraining the DSS from arresting Emefiele.
