The management of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) says it will prosecute what it calls the ‘reckless operators’ of the commercial boat that capsized in Kwara State, killing no fewer than 106 passengers.
The accident occurred on June 12, 2023, along the River Niger in Patigi Local Government Area of Kwara.

In a statement, the General Manager, Corporate Affairs, NIWA, Mr. Jibril Darda’u, said the boat accident could have been avoided if the operators had applied safety measures, such as providing the passengers with life jackets.
He added that NIWA will investigate the negligence that led to the incident and prosecute those found culpable.
