British PM Urges Israel To Show ‘Restraint’ And Protect Civilians In Jenin

British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, yesterday, urged Israel to protect Palestinian civilians as the country’s armed forces wage their biggest operation in years in the occupied West Bank.

Prime Minister Sunak also reiterated the UK’s support for Israel’s right to self-defence, and condemned what he called, Palestinian terrorist attacks.

While urging the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to demonstrate restraint in its operation, and for all parties to avoid further escalation in both the West Bank and Gaza, both now and in the days ahead, the Prime Minister also said the protection of civilians must be prioritised in any military operation.

He also called on Israel to adhere to principles of necessity and proportionality when defending their security interests.

The Israeli military began what appears to be one of its most extensive operations in the territory in years with drone strikes in Jenin early on Monday. After exchanging gunfire, 8 palestinians were left dead, with 80 injured.

Israel describes the military operation as dealing a heavy blow to terrorist organisations.
