Nigeria’s Average Passengers’ Airfare Increased By 34% In May

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) says the average fare paid by air travellers in Nigeria increased by 34% in May 2023.

According to the NBS Transport Fare Watch Report for May, Kebbi State recorded the highest air transport fare for specified routes and single journeys at N80,000.

Bayelsa followed at N79,050 while Abia recorded the least average fare paid by air passengers at N69,800.

The bureau noted that fares increased on a year-on-year basis from just under N56,000 in May last year to almost N75,000 in May this year.

The report did not disclose the reasons behind the significant rise, but the NBS stated that experts have attributed the high prices in transportation generally to the fluctuating prices of aviation fuel and forex scarcity.
