Labour Minister Pleads With NLC To Suspend Two-Day Warning Strike

Mr. Simon Lalong, the Minister of Labour and Employment, has appealed to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to suspend its proposed two-day warning strike.

On September 1, Joe Ajaero, the NLC President, had announced that the strike would commence today in protest of the impact of petrol subsidy removal on Nigerians.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja yesterday, Mr. Lalong said the strike would be detrimental to the gains already being recorded by the new administration.

He asked the leadership of the congress to give the government more time to address the issues they have raised.

The Labour Minister also pledged that the ministry will continue to pursue policies aimed at massive employment generation in all sectors of the economy, but says this cannot be done in an atmosphere devoid of industrial peace.

The national leadership of the NLC shunned the last-minute reconciliatory meeting called by the Minister of Labour and Employment.

Simon Lalong, had called for the meeting in a bid to avert labour’s two-day warning strike.

Only the leadership of the Trade Union Congress, led by its President, Festus Osifo, showed up for the meeting scheduled for 3 p.m. yesterday.
