Oluwaseun Osiyemi, Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, clarified that the recent federal high court ruling in Abuja, which prohibits the Directorate of Road Traffic Services from stopping vehicles, impounding them, or imposing fines, does not apply in Lagos.
Speaking on Tuesday, Commissioner Osiyemi explained that Lagos State’s Transport Sector Reform Law, TSRL-2018, grants the Vehicle Inspection Office, VIO, the authority to stop, impound vehicles, and enforce fines. In contrast, there is no such law empowering VIO officials in Abuja.
He emphasized that the ruling, delivered by Justice Evelyn Maha in a case brought by human rights lawyer Marshal Abubakar, is specific to Abuja, as he urged motorists in Lagos to continue adhering to the state’s transport laws.
