The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has officially completed the federal government’s ambitious initiative to link all phone numbers in the country to the National Identification Number (NIN), a key move aimed at enhancing security and accountability.

Speaking at the 2024 annual corporate governance conference in Lagos, NCC’s Executive Vice-Chairman, Aminu Maida, emphasized the significance of the NIN-SIM linkage project, which began in December 2020. While acknowledging the difficulties faced by Nigerians throughout the process, Mallam Maida underscored that the completion of this initiative marks a critical step forward, despite some concerns about the authenticity of linked identities.

The project, which directed telecommunications companies to block unregistered or unlinked SIM cards, faced numerous delays as the NCC extended deadlines to accommodate the millions of Nigerians struggling to comply. Nevertheless, the initiative has now reached its conclusion, laying the groundwork for improved accountability in the telecom sector.
