The Israeli government has said it has killed Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, the alleged mastermind behind the October 7 attack, marking what it described as a significant blow to the Palestinian militant group.
Sinwar, who rose to become one of Hamas’ top figures, was killed in a targeted military operation in the southern Gaza Strip on Wednesday, following what the Israeli military described as a “year-long pursuit.”
In a statement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hailed the killing of Mr Sinwar as a critical milestone in Israel’s campaign against Hamas, but stressed that the broader military assault on Gaza was far from over.

Israel has accused Sinwar of orchestrating the October 7 attack, calling it ‘the deadliest assault in Israeli history.’ Since the start of the conflict, Israeli forces have been focused on locating and neutralizing Sinwar, whose influence within Hamas grew after the killing of the group’s political chief, Ismail Haniyeh, in July.
