The Lagos State House of Assembly has urged the National Assembly to formally recognize the state’s 37 Local Council Development Areas, LCDAs, as full-fledged Local Government Areas.

These LCDAs, originally established by then-Governor Bola Tinubu in 2003, have been a significant part of the state’s administrative framework.

Amidst ongoing discussions, the House is currently considering a new bill titled, “A Bill for a Law to Provide for the Local Government System, Establishment and Administration, and to Consolidate All Laws on Local Government Administration.”

Concerns arose that the bill could lead to the dissolution of the LCDAs, but Speaker Mudashiru Obasa has dismissed these fears, clarifying that the bill aims to strengthen, not scrap, the existing LCDAs.

In light of recent developments, the House has also invited the state’s Attorney-General, Lawal Pedro, to provide clarification on the recent Supreme Court ruling regarding financial autonomy for local governments.
