Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has suspended the state’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Fidelis Mnyim, over his involvement in a legal challenge against Nigeria’s anti-corruption agencies, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC).
Attorney-General Mnyim was part of a coalition of 19 states questioning the constitutional legitimacy of the EFCC’s establishment.
The Supreme Court, on Tuesday, reserved its judgement in the case. While Imo and Bauchi States joined as co-plaintiffs, three states — Anambra, Ebonyi, and Adamawa — have since withdrawn their suits.
The states claim that the EFCC Establishment Act, enacted in 2004, violated Section 12 of the Nigerian Constitution by bypassing required legislative protocols, arguing that it was largely based on the United Nations Convention against Corruption.

The Supreme Court will announce a date for its ruling.
