A Ugandan court has sentenced former Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) commander Thomas Kwoyelo to 40 years in prison following a landmark war crimes trial. This ruling marks a significant moment as it is the first time a member of the notorious group has faced trial for war crimes in Uganda.
Mr. Kwoyelo was convicted in August on 44 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity linked to the LRA’s two-decade rebellion against President Yoweri Museveni. The sentence was announced by lead judge Michael Elubu at the International Crimes Division of the high court in Gulu.
In his remarks, Judge Elubu emphasized that Kwoyelo has the right to appeal both the sentence and the conviction within 14 days. This case represents a pivotal step in Uganda’s efforts to address past atrocities committed during the LRA’s reign of terror.
