The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has raised concerns over the ongoing power outage that has crippled parts of northern Nigeria, leaving millions in darkness and disrupting businesses. The blackout is attributed to vandalism of the second Shiroro Power Line, which supplies the Kaduna station and feeds other northern states.
In a statement by CNG’s National Coordinator, Comrade Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, the group criticized the failure to repair the first Shiroro Power Line, which has been faulty for months, saying that timely repairs could have prevented the current crisis. CNG also highlighted a significant infrastructural gap, noting the lack of a transmission system capable of delivering sufficient power to the North-West and North-East regions.
Despite the establishment of the Transmission Rehabilitation and Expansion Programme (TREP), with a budget of $1.661 billion, CNG said mismanagement has stalled progress, leaving the northern region underserved in electricity distribution.
The coalition is urging the federal government, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), northern governors, and lawmakers to expedite efforts to restore power and review the electricity distribution framework to ensure equitable access to power across all regions.
