Senate Urges Federal Government to Prioritise Debt Settlement with Promissory Notes

The Senate has urged the Federal Government to prioritise settling outstanding debts by issuing Promissory Notes for reimbursements owed to states, as well as judgement debts and other liabilities incurred by various ministries, departments, and agencies.

This resolution was adopted during Tuesday’s plenary session following a report from the Committee on Local and Foreign Debts regarding the Promissory Notes Program aimed at reimbursing Kebbi and Nasarawa State Governments for newly constructed airport projects undertaken on behalf of the Federal Government.

In May, the Senate reviewed a request from President Bola Tinubu to establish a Promissory Note program that would reimburse Kebbi State Government N15.1 billion and Nasarawa State Government N9.5 billion for these airport projects.

With the approval of the Promissory Note program, the Senate aims to address the outstanding claims and liabilities owed to the two states, ensuring that the projects initiated for the federal benefit are duly compensated.
