Human Rights Watch Urges Burkina Faso to Prioritise Civilian Protection Amid Armed Attacks

Human Rights Watch has called on Burkina Faso to urgently enhance the protection of civilians amid ongoing attacks by armed groups.

In a recent report, the NGO criticised the government for putting citizens at “unnecessary risk” during an attack by the al-Qaeda-linked Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), which resulted in the deaths of at least 133 people in August.

The incident, one of the deadliest this year, took place in the Barsalogho commune, located about 80 kilometers from the capital, Ouagadougou.

Witnesses reported that villagers were compelled to assist security forces in digging trenches for protection, only to come under fire from JNIM fighters.
