President Bola Tinubu has named Major General Olufemi Olatubosun Oluyede as the Acting Chief of Army Staff.
In a statement released on Wednesday, presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga confirmed that Major General Oluyede will temporarily assume the role of Chief of Army Staff until the return of Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, who is currently receiving medical treatment abroad.
Major General Oluyede, a coursemate of Lieutenant General Lagbaja, previously served as the 56th Commander of the Infantry Corps of the Nigerian Army, stationed in Jaji, Kaduna.
The appointment follows recent speculation surrounding Lieutenant General Lagbaja’s health. On 20th October, former presidential aide Jackson Ude suggested the Army Chief had passed away from cancer while overseas. However, this claim was promptly dismissed by Army spokesman Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, who said that Lieutenant General Lagbaja is on official leave.
