Farmers in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State have raised alarm over a troubling increase in deaths from snakebites during crop harvests. This pressing issue was brought to light by Ndagi Zakari, the representative for Mokwa in the State House of Assembly, who disclosed that farmers are frequently attacked by snakes while working in the fields.
Mr. Zakari while pointing out that the exorbitant cost of anti-venom injections, which can soar to N200,000, renders them unaffordable for many farmers, added that some victims are left with no choice but to turn to traditional remedies, which he characterised as both unsafe and ineffective.
In response to this crisis, the Assembly has urged the Niger State Government to provide free anti-venom injections at public hospitals to help mitigate the fatalities.
Lawmakers emphasised the urgent need for government intervention to prevent further loss of life among farmers in the state, highlighting the critical nature of the situation.
