Governor Abdullahi Sule has signed the Nasarawa State Local Government Law 2024, following its passage by the State House of Assembly.
At the signing ceremony in Lafia, Gov. Sule commended the Speaker Danladi Jatau and the assembly members for their efforts, highlighting the law’s significance in enhancing operations at the local government level.
The law abolishes the local government joint account system, aligning with a Supreme Court ruling that mandates financial autonomy for local governments to promote transparency and accountability. It also establishes Area Administrative Councils, which will be appointed by the governor and vetted by the state assembly, funded by the state.
On his part, the Speaker of the State Assembly, Mr. Danladi Jatau while confirming that the bill was passed into law on Oct.31, 2024, assured that the bill had followed due legislative processes before its passage.
The State Attorney General, Labaran Magaji, emphasised that the law was thoroughly vetted to ensure compliance with the Supreme Court’s judgement on local government autonomy.
