The Federal Government has attributed the recent collapses of Nigeria’s national grid to poor maintenance practices, outdated equipment, and other operational challenges. This disclosure was made by Nafisatu Asabe Ali, Chair of the investigative committee and Executive Director of the Independent System Operator at the Transmission Company of Nigeria.
In a report presented on Wednesday at the Ministry of Power headquarters in Abuja, Ms. Ali highlighted the critical issues, including power surges that exceeded equipment capacity, causing blackouts on October 14 and 19.
The committee’s findings point to key vulnerabilities, such as infrastructure vandalism, insufficient maintenance coordination, lack of free governors in generation plants, and limited skilled manpower.
Reacting to the report, Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu pledged to seek additional funding in the 2024 Supplementary Budget and the 2025 Appropriation Bill to implement necessary reforms aimed at stabilising the grid and preventing further breakdowns.
