The Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), popularly known as KAI, has demolished 138 shanties around the canal bank in Ajao Estate. The operation, carried out on Thursday, was part of the state government’s ongoing efforts to tackle environmental infractions and illegal encampments in public spaces.
Tokunbo Wahab, the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, shared details of the demolition in a video posted on X.com on Friday. He revealed that occupants of the demolished structures had been paying between N60,000 and N100,000 annually in rent to reside in the makeshift shelters.
Mr. Wahab while emphasising that the cleanup was aimed at restoring environmental order and preventing illegal activities along the canal stressed the government’s determination to enforce urban planning laws, urging residents to comply with regulations to avoid similar actions.
