The Presidency has responded to former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s criticisms of President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Obasanjo, speaking at the Chinua Achebe Leadership Forum at Yale University, described Nigeria as a failed state under Tinubu’s leadership, accusing the government of corruption and advocating for a revamp of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

In reaction, Sunday Dare, Special Adviser to the President on Public Communication, dismissed Obasanjo’s comments, asserting that Nigeria’s democracy suffered significant setbacks during his tenure. Mr. Dare stated that President Tinubu was addressing long-standing issues left by previous administrations, urging Obasanjo to apologise to Nigerians for failing to establish foundational infrastructure for the country’s progress.

Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, also criticised Obasanjo, accusing him of constitutional violations and undemocratic practices, including the alleged unconstitutional impeachment of four governors during his presidency. Onanuga further stated that Obasanjo had lost credibility as a leader and called on Nigerians to disregard his critiques.
