The Federal High Court in Lagos has adjourned a N5 billion copyright infringement suit filed against gospel singer Sinach by music producer Michael Oluwole, popularly known as Maye, until January 2025. The lawsuit revolves around the 2016 hit song ‘Way Maker’.
In suit number FHC/L/CS/402/2024, Maye is seeking a declaration from the court that he is a co-author and co-owner of the musical work. He claims he recorded, mixed, and mastered the track while contributing instrumental accompaniments, such as piano and synthesizers, without transferring his performer’s rights. The producer alleges that Sinach released the song without his consent, failed to compensate him, and obtained licenses without sharing proceeds, actions he described as “oppressive.”
Maye is demanding N5 billion in damages for alleged cumulative rights infringements. He is also seeking a court order to ensure that all fees generated from the song’s licenses or assignments are equitably shared between him and Sinach in the absence of a written agreement.

In her defence, Sinach, through her counsel Emeka Etiaba, denied Maye’s claims, asserting sole authorship of ‘Way Maker’. The gospel artist argued that the song was composed and arranged before Oluwole’s involvement and highlighted her global recognition even prior to the song’s release.
