Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon has expressed deep concern over the escalating insecurity in northern Nigeria, describing the situation as alarming and calling for urgent action to restore peace in the region. Gowon made these remarks during a visit by the League of Northern Democrats (LND) to his residence in Abuja on Wednesday.
The delegation, led by former Kano State Governor Ibrahim Shekarau, engaged the elder statesman in discussions on the challenges facing the North. Gen. Gowon commended the group for its commitment to addressing the region’s issues and urged them to work with other stakeholders to develop practical solutions.
He said, “All these differences are beautiful in a way if we can be able to meet together and try to really resolve all our various problems. Now, that’s the reason why, for example, today I feel very sad with the sort of thing that is happening in various parts of the country, especially in the North. Recently, I learned about this group from El Salvador, Echeverria, Nicaragua, and I understand they came from Mali. So, there it is, and I saw a new group coming in and to create some problem for us. So, I think, let me say that, you know, I’m certainly very undelighted that you are able to come and see me and the introduction that you all made of yourself, etc., touched me very much.”
