The House of Representatives has called on the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy and the Ministry of Transportation to investigate recent boat mishaps in Nigeria. The motion follows a tragic accident in Kogi State involving over 160 passengers, with only 24 rescued, 54 confirmed dead, and many still missing.
Honourable Unyime Idem, who moved the motion, expressed concern over the increasing number of boat accidents and the safety risks posed to Nigeria’s waterways.

The House also urged the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) and the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) to enforce strict safety regulations and ensure compliance with international maritime standards.
