UN General Assembly Demands Gaza Ceasefire, Backs Palestinian Refugee Agency

The United Nations General Assembly has overwhelmingly called for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, while also reaffirming its support for the UN agency aiding Palestinian refugees, UNRWA.

In a decisive vote on Wednesday, the Assembly adopted a resolution demanding an immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire in Gaza. Of the 193-member body, 158 countries voted in favour, nine opposed the measure, and 13 abstained.

A separate resolution, expressing support for UNRWA and condemning a newly introduced Israeli law that seeks to ban the agency’s operations within Israel, also passed with significant backing; 159 votes in favour, 9 against, and 11 abstentions.

These votes followed two days of impassioned debate, during which numerous representatives urged an end to Israel’s prolonged conflict in the Palestinian territory. The 14-month war has claimed the lives of at least 44,805 people, predominantly Palestinian women and children, and left over 106,000 injured.
