Nigeria has fulfilled its financial obligations to the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, for the first time in nearly two decades, contributing ₦85.54 billion and $54 million for 2023 and part of 2024.

The announcement was made by Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, during the organisation’s 66th Ordinary Summit held in Abuja on Sunday.

Describing the payment as “a vote of confidence” in ECOWAS, Dr. Touray commended Nigeria’s renewed commitment, calling it a reflection of the country’s leadership role in West Africa.

He further noted the critical importance of the funds, which will bolster ECOWAS programmes aimed at fostering regional integration and socio-economic development.

Nigeria’s financial struggles in meeting its commitments to ECOWAS in previous years had been a point of concern, making this milestone particularly significant for the region.
