A court in Guinea has sentenced former Defence Minister Mohamed Diané to five years in prison for corruption, illicit enrichment, embezzlement, and money laundering.
Mr. Diané, who served under President Alpha Condé from 2015 to 2021, was also fined $58.5 million, with his bank accounts and properties in Conakry and Kankan ordered confiscated. The court ruled that the origin of his assets could not be justified.
He has been in detention since May 2022 as part of the military junta’s anti-corruption campaign. Since seizing power, the junta has made fighting corruption a top priority and established a special anti-corruption court.
