The Super Eagles have wrapped up 2024 as Africa’s fifth-ranked side in FIFA’s latest standings, published on Thursday, despite a challenging year-end slump that saw them slide to 44th globally.
While the team retained their position among the continent’s elite, finishing ahead of regional rivals South Africa, Cameroon, and Ghana, their global ranking reflects a drop of eight places; an outcome attributed to inconsistent performances in crucial matches.

The rankings highlight a year of mixed fortunes for Nigeria. Although they maintained fifth place in Africa, their global position has worsened compared to the end of 2023, when they were ranked 42nd worldwide but held sixth spot on the continent.
On the global stage, Argentina continues to dominate as FIFA’s top-ranked team, with France, Spain, England, and Brazil completing the top five.
