The death toll from Cyclone Chido in Mozambique has risen to 73, according to the National Institute of Risk and Disaster Management. Most fatalities occurred in Cabo Delgado province, with 66 reported deaths, while four were killed in Nampula and three in Niassa provinces. One person remains missing.
The cyclone, which made landfall on Sunday, caused widespread destruction with winds of up to 260 kilometres per hour and heavy rainfall of 250 millimetres within 24 hours. More than 39,100 homes were destroyed, while 13,400 others were partially damaged, affecting over 329,500 people across northern Mozambique.

The cyclone had earlier swept through the Indian Ocean island of Mayotte, where there are fears of significant casualties. In Mozambique, over 540 people sustained injuries from the storm’s impact.
UNICEF’s Mozambique spokesperson, Guy Taylor, described the situation as “devastation,” noting that the affected areas were already vulnerable due to conflict and underdevelopment.
