Federal Government Lifts Zamfara Mining Ban After Five Years

The Federal Government has lifted the ban on mining activities in Zamfara State, citing improved security conditions in the region.

The announcement was made on Sunday by the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, during a press briefing in Abuja. Mr Alake explained that while the ban had been implemented with good intentions, it inadvertently opened the door for illegal miners to exploit the state’s rich resources, depriving the nation of significant revenue.

He highlighted Zamfara’s vast mineral wealth, describing the state as a vital contributor to Nigeria’s economic prospects.

The minister further noted that resuming formal mining operations would not only boost national revenue but also strengthen intelligence efforts to curtail illegal mining activities and ensure better resource management.

The ban, imposed five years ago, was initially aimed at curbing insecurity linked to mining-related violence in the area.
