The Nigerian Police Force, NPF, has issued a stern warning, stating that individuals who refuse to assist police officers under attack could face a fine of N100,000 or a prison sentence of up to three months.
In a tweet shared on Sunday, the Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, highlighted the legal obligations of citizens under Section 99 of the Police Act 2020.
Quoting the Act, Mr. Adejobi explained; ‘When a person is called upon to aid and assist a police officer who is, while in the discharge of his duty, assaulted or resisted, or in danger of being assaulted or resisted, and the person refuses or neglects to aid and assist, the person commits an offence and is liable on conviction to a fine of N100,000 or imprisonment for a term of three months, or both.’

He further clarified that individuals are also required to assist judges, magistrates, or police officers in apprehending suspects or preventing their escape when such assistance is reasonably demanded.
The announcement sparked mixed reactions on social media, with some users questioning the practicality of the directive, while others expressed support for strengthening the rule of law.
