Power Generation Rose by 34% in 2024, Says Minister
Adebayo Adelabu, Nigeria’s Minister of Power

Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has announced a significant 34% increase in the nation’s power generation in 2024.

Addressing the Senate Committee on Power during a budget defence session on Monday, Mr Adelabu stated that his administration inherited an average generation capacity of 4,100 megawatts in 2023. By the end of 2024, this figure had risen to 5,528 megawatts.

The minister explained that while the initial goal was to achieve 6,000 megawatts, unforeseen challenges hindered the realisation of this target. He cited grid disturbances towards the end of the year as a key factor.

Mr Adelabu also highlighted infrastructure issues, including the unresolved failure of the Shiroro-Kaduna-Mando transmission line, which has strained the grid and led to frequent collapses. Additionally, he revealed that the Ugwuaji-Makurdi transmission line was vandalised but swiftly repaired, and it remains the sole power source for northern Nigeria.
