Telecommunication spending in Nigeria surged to an unprecedented N5.3 trillion in 2023, driven by a significant rise in data consumption, according to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
The figure, detailed in the NCC’s 2023 Subscriber and Network Performance Report released on Monday, represents a 37% increase from the N3.8 trillion recorded in 2022.
Data usage by subscribers soared to over 713,000 terabytes by December 2023, up from just over 518,000 terabytes in December 2022.

Meanwhile, growth in voice call traffic remained subdued, with total outgoing calls reaching 205 billion minutes—a marginal increase of 0.59% compared to 204 billion minutes recorded the previous year.
