Obasa Absent as Meranda Continues as Lagos Assembly Speaker
Mudashiru Obasa, former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, and the current Speaker, Mojisola Meranda.

Mudashiru Obasa was absent from Monday’s plenary session, despite insisting he remains the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly following his impeachment. His absence marks the third consecutive sitting presided over by Mojisola Meranda, who officially assumed the role after Obasa’s removal. The former speaker has continued to argue that his impeachment was not conducted in accordance with due process.

In a move to tighten security, the Assembly has instructed its officials to require valid identity cards for access to the premises. This is accompanied by a heightened police presence around the Assembly complex, as the legislature continues to deal with the fallout from the leadership dispute.

At Monday’s session, 39 lawmakers, including Meranda, gathered for a group photograph to dispel rumours that the Assembly had split following Obasa’s impeachment. The photograph was intended to show unity among the remaining members after the embattled former speaker broke his silence over the weekend, reaffirming his claim to the position.

Meanwhile, Olumuyiwa Jimoh, a former Deputy Majority Leader of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has asserted that Mudashiru Obasa be suspended from the House for insisting that he remains the Speaker of the Assembly despite his removal.
