Kehinde G. Hamzat, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Lagos, has highlighted key causes of petrol tanker explosions in Nigeria. In an interview with RadioNow 95.3 FM, Hamzat cited outdated, poorly maintained tankers, negligent driving practices, and bad road conditions as significant factors contributing to the frequent incidents.
Hamzat also stressed the need for greater public sensitisation and better government policies to prevent such tragedies, emphasising that these explosions are preventable with the right measures in place. His comments come after a series of devastating incidents involving petrol tankers in recent weeks.

“Some of these tankers, the material used in fabricating some of these containers may not have conformed, I use the word may not have conformed with the minimum safety standard and these I think we should look inward, not trying to throw blame to any agency organization by the standards organization of Nigeria to ensure that the manufacturer meets the required standard before being put to use.”
This follows recent directives from President Bola Tinubu, who has ordered the FRSC and other traffic enforcement agencies to take swift action to address the ongoing problem. The president’s directive is in response to two deadly explosions in quick succession: one on the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, which killed 18 people, and another in Niger State, which claimed the lives of over 70 people.
