5421 killed 31154 injured in 2024 road crashes nationwide says FRSC

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has reported the arrest of 21,580 traffic offenders across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory in 2024. This marks a decrease from the 29,220 offenders recorded in 2023. The Corps Marshal, Malam Shehu Mohammed, made the announcement during a press briefing in Abuja, providing insights into the FRSC’s performance for the year.

Mohammed highlighted a significant reduction in the number of road traffic crashes (RTCs) and injuries in 2024 compared to the previous year. He also pointed out that while fatalities decreased overall, 411 deaths, or 7.6% of the total, were not directly caused by crashes but by secondary factors.

One of the main contributing factors to these fatalities was the dangerous practice of scooping fuel from fallen tankers, which Mohammed described as a “monster” the FRSC is actively working to combat. Additionally, the loading of trailers with goods and people, along with fatigue, speed violations, and poor vehicle maintenance, have been identified as major causes of accidents during the year.
