NCDC Heightens Surveillance Over Ebola Outbreak in Uganda

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, has heightened disease surveillance following the recent outbreak of the Sudan virus disease in Uganda. This follows a confirmation by the World Health Organisation of the outbreak on January 30, warning that the virus belongs to the same genus as the deadly Ebola virus.

While no cases have been detected in Nigeria, the NCDC in a statement released on Sunday said it is monitoring the situation through the National Emerging Viral Haemorrhagic Diseases Technical Working Group. It added that it has also put measures in place to strengthen preparedness against a possible outbreak.

The agency classifies Nigeria’s risk level as moderate, following a recent risk assessment conducted in response to the Marburg virus outbreak in Rwanda.

The NCDC is urging Nigerians to maintain strict hygiene, avoid bushmeat consumption, and limit non-essential travel to countries with confirmed Ebola cases.
