UN Food Programme Commits $2.5 Billion to Tackle Hunger in Nigeria

The United Nations World Food Programme, WFP, has earmarked $2.5 billion for its Nigeria Country Strategy Plan spanning 2023 to 2027, in a concerted effort to combat hunger and enhance nutrition across the nation.

Speaking at a co-creation workshop in Abuja on Wednesday, WFP’s Country Director, David Stevenson, representing the organisation’s Head of Programme, Mr Seriene Loum, emphasised the agency’s commitment to eradicating hunger in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs, 1 and 2, which focus on poverty reduction and zero hunger.

Mr Stevenson underscored the scale of the crisis, noting that an estimated 25 million Nigerians are currently grappling with acute food insecurity, with projections indicating a worsening trend.

He also highlighted Nigeria’s expansive social safety net initiatives, describing them as among the largest in Africa, with the potential to lift millions out of poverty.

The workshop was organised in partnership with the National Social Investment Programme Agency (N-SIPA) to refine strategies for effective implementation.
