Nigerian Police Arrest Suspect in $597,000 Romance Fraud Case

The Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre has arrested a man accused of defrauding an American citizen of more than $597,000 in a sophisticated romance scam.  

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday, the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, disclosed that the suspect allegedly swindled Deborah Woods, a United States national, through an elaborate scheme involving identity theft, computer-related fraud, and money laundering.

Authorities say the suspect has confessed to the crime. A search of his residence led to the recovery of multiple electronic devices believed to have been used in the fraudulent activities, along with eight BMW vehicles suspected to be proceeds of the scam.  

The police reaffirmed their commitment to tackling cybercrime and urged the public to remain vigilant against online fraudsters.
