The Federal Government has proposed a 12-year basic education model but has clarified that it will not be scrapping Junior Secondary School (JSS) and Senior Secondary School (SSS). The announcement was made by the Director of Press at the Federal Ministry of Education, Folashade Boriowo, following misleading reports suggesting the changes had already been implemented.
According to Boriowo, the proposal, presented by the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, at an Extraordinary National Council on Education (NCE) meeting in Abuja on Thursday, was intended for discussion and not as an immediate policy change. The ministry stressed that the current 6-3-3 structure would remain in place, with the new model aiming to provide 12 years of compulsory education.

The proposed reform seeks to eliminate the barriers between Junior and Senior Secondary levels, facilitating a smoother transition for students without the need for an external assessment. However, the ministry emphasised that the proposal is still in the consultation phase and has not been finalised.
The final decision on whether to adopt this new model will be made during the National Council on Education Meeting scheduled for October 2025, following further consultations with key stakeholders.
