ActionAid Nigeria has stated that developed nations owe Nigeria an estimated $9.9 trillion in climate reparations dating back to 1960. The organisation’s Country Director, Andrew Mamedu, made this assertion in Abuja, emphasising the urgent need for climate justice.
Speaking to journalists, Mr Mamedu argued that highly industrialised nations, responsible for significant carbon emissions, must compensate less industrialised countries for the environmental damage they have caused. He noted that the United States alone is projected to owe approximately $80 trillion in climate debts between 1980 and 2050. Â

Despite Nigeria’s mounting debt, with external liabilities nearing $50 billion, Mr Mamedu stressed that the country remains a net creditor in the global climate finance debate. He called on developed nations to honour their financial obligations, stating that climate reparations are critical in addressing the economic and environmental burdens borne by nations in the Global South.
